Sophomore Jean Luc Wilson (East Moline, Ill./United Township) poured in a career-best 33 points and the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team nearly pulled off a huge second-half comeback before coming up short in an 81-75 loss at Highland on Thursday.

The Chargers (1-3) trailed 45-31 at halftime and by as much as 18 in the second half before staging their late rally. Sandburg pulled within two points on a pair of occasions, the last on a 3-pointer by Gabe Mason (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) with a minute left to make it 77-75. The Cougars, though, hit four straight free throws in the final minute to close out the victory.

Wilson hit 14 of 22 shots, including 4 of 6 from distance, to lead all players in scoring. He surpassed his previous career best of 27 points, set Jan. 21, 2020, at Illinois Valley. Wilson also recorded six rebounds, three steals and two assists Thursday.

Mason hit three 3s and scored 16 for the Chargers. Sophomore forward Lane Ippensen (La Prairie, Ill./Camp Point Central) added a career-high 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and led the Chargers with seven rebounds.

Sandburg went 17 of 27 from the field and hit half of its 10 3s in the second half. The Chargers finished 30 of 59 overall from the floor.

Carlos Ramsey led four Highland players in double figures with 25 points.
